Now the title of this post is an oft-used truism that’s mostly used for motivational purposes. This was originally supposed to have been a podcast, but here goes. How many of you are keeping your New Year’s Resolutions? How many of you are not keeping them?  (infographic courtesy of casino.org)

According to the infographic, this is not encouraging news. People are great at joining things, pledging money or whatever else- but we’re not very good at sticking with things. According to a recent CNN report on the matter, about 40% of Americans still make NYRs. Out of that cohort, about 40-44% of them are successful at six months (https://www.cnn.com/2020/01/01/health/keeping-new-years-resolutions-wellness/index.html). Infographics and news agencies notwithstanding, I ask the question: In the stuff of life, when it comes to success, who is responsible for it? We all know it’s the individual. Since we live in an era of non-judgmentalism and other “million-dollar words”, most people are not willing to call out bad behavior on anything. This is very telling when it comes to the matters of motivation and success. Now while Rome seemingly burns and we all have our fiddles and lyres out, playing the 2020 traphouse remix of the “Song of Myself” (thank you Walt Whitman), the question remains: Who is responsible for our success? To ask the question is to answer it. If it’s to be, it’s up to me. I encourage all of you to get in front of the mirror, your safe space, wherever you are…. and take a good, honest inventory of yourself. Think hard about the things that you want. Visualize yourself attaining, achieving and having the things you desire. Now take a good look and ask yourself…

  1. What have I done to make this happen?
  2. Am I any closer to my goals than I was yesterday?
  3. What am I doing (self-sabotage, procrastination, etc)
  4. Am I a dreamer, a talker or a doer?
  5. Do I really want this or is this just a “passing fancy”?

If it’s to be it’s up to me. Easy to say, hard to do. Why? Because we are human. So many of us, yours truly included, are battling the thing called procrastination. In the working world, the costs of procrastination is around a $650 billion (yes, BILLION) annually [1] (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-staggering-cost-of-procrastination/). This gets to be a very clear problem for a lot of businesses, but let’s take a look… inside… at us. How many dreams, that were quite attainable, fell off by the wayside because we couldn’t be bothered to show an ounce of determination to see that thing through? This very thing we swore to ourselves, God and the world at large that we wanted beyond anything else… we let things slide. Whether we immerse ourselves in out technology, books anything else to avoid the things we set out to do, procrastination and his cousin active avoidance take center stage. Among the myriad of reasons why we procrastinate  [2] (https://solvingprocrastination.com/why-people-procrastinate/) is usually a fear of failure, not measuring up, fear of others, etc. Or we tend to get lazy, fooling ourselves into thinking we have more time (and chances) than what we really do.

If it’s to be, it’s up to me. Easy to say, hard to do. I urge you to become more proactive in your lives- whether it’s pursuing your education, writing that book, making that move to get that dream job, whatever it is- just do it. You’ll never know if you don’t. You and only you are responsible for your success.
